They say: At the start of 2019, the e-tron SUV signalled the first phase of Audi’s all-electric revolution, and now here comes the second in the form of the sharply styled e-tron Sportback. The new arrival proudly combines the power, presence and space of an SUV with the elegance of a four-door coupé, and is even more sleek and aerodynamically efficient than its SUV sibling. The dramatic sweep of the roof line, which arcs steeply down to the rear of the car, and the lower edge of the third side window, which kicks upwards in true Sportback fashion, are just some of the features that differentiate Audi’s latest all-electric model.
Of course, there are also plenty of evocative styling cues that instantly connect the new e-tron Sportback with the e-tron SUV. These include the largely enclosed platinum grey single-frame grille, and the four horizontal segments in the lower area of the Matrix LED headlights, which create an e-tron-specific signature in the daytime running lights.
The e-tron signature is emphasised and interpreted in three dimensions at numerous points throughout the car, including on the striking side sills, where black inlays draw the eye to the battery location beneath the passenger cell. The battery system of the Audi e-tron Sportback 55 quattro stores 95kWh of energy, and feeds its power to two electric motors, one powering the front wheels and the second the rear.
Rest assured that, just like the e-tron SUV, the e-tron Sportback is as effortless to drive as any Audi model. As you’d expect, the car produces no emissions on the road, but what might surprise you is the scintillating performance on offer. With an output of 265kW available in ‘normal’ D driving mode, the car can accelerate to 62mph in just 6.6 seconds. However, once you shift to S mode and fully depress the accelerator pedal to engage the boost function, 300kW is deployed for eight seconds, and that shortens the 0-62mph sprint time to just 5.7 seconds.
We say: You can look good and be good to the environment. With a range of up to 278 miles this does seem a massive upgrade and, combined with a much sleeker look, sounds like a winning formula.
